Passive fire protection and thermal insulation for marine applications

Our technical textile solutions for high-temperature applications in the marine sector reliably offer protection and functionality: Our solutions keep heat away from sensitive or protected areas and reliably insulate, for example, exhaust pipes on ships. Our developments are versatile and can be used wherever heat needs to be kept away or contained within a system. In interior construction, our welding protection fabrics are used to protect finished sections or sensitive components from sparks and molten metal.

  • On the safe side

According to SOLAS* (Safety of Life at Sea), all surfaces on (passenger) ships above 220°C must be insulated or protected to prevent the ignition of flammable liquids.

Most fires in engine rooms are caused by ruptured oil lines that spray oil onto hot surfaces. These fires are very costly for shipowners and their insurers, as the risk of fatal accidents or injuries to crew and passengers cannot be estimated.

Passive fire protection and welding protection

During the interior construction of ships, innovative HKO solutions, specifically developed for passive fire protection in the marine sector, offer indispensable protection. During welding work, already completed sections or sensitive components can be covered with heat-resistant fabrics, thus protecting them from sparks. Additionally, HKO fiberglass fabrics provide protection for the working personnel. Our MED-certified and REACH-compliant welder protection fabrics reliably ensure temperature resistance of up to 1,000°C and are available in strong, robust as well as lighter and easily wrapable variants.

OUR SUSTAINABLE OFFER

  • Preservation of health and materials

Passive fire protection for people and surfaces/equipment from fire-related injuries/damage.

  • Material efficiency and reduced resource consumption

Robust product quality allows the use of a single layer instead of multiple layers of cloth.

  • Transportation

Reliable European supply chain: lower CO2 emissions through transportation.

Thermal Insulation

Specifically for the insulation of exhaust pipes, manifold pipes, and turbochargers, we have developed the HAKOTHERM®-800-Easy-Wrap: a wrap made of a needle mat with a thread-reinforced aluminum foil. The insulation performance is reliable up to a temperature of 800°C and remains consistently effective within this range. An optional V4A reinforcement is easily possible, making the fabric more robust against influences such as wires and puncture holes during processing. For the insulation of exhaust pipes, HKO offers a wide range of certified materials that comply with the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 96/98 / EC.
